One of the iirominenl trunk lines of theWest adopted in 1897 a very systematicmethod in their examination of firemen,who they expect later on may be pro-moted to engineers. This company use the progressiveexamination, having a first, second andthird years examination of all the fire-men in the service. All these examina-tions are written; those 01 the first andsecond years are conducted by the mastermechanic or traveling engineer underwhose charge the fireman is at the written examination, they areexamined orally by the same officer. Usu-ally all the men pass the first and secondyears examination. If they do not passthe first examination, they have a secondtrial later; if they fail in the second trial,they are dropped from the service. Thesame results follow ill the subsequentexaminations, in case of a failure.
