Jules Bordet. Portrait of Jules Jean Baptiste Vincent Bordet (1870-1961), Belgian bacteriologist. Bordet joined the French Pasteur Institute in Paris in 1894 and worked with E. Metchnikoff. With Octave Gengou, Bordet found that antibodies fight disease in conjunction with another component in blood. He named the component alexin but it is now known as complement. He also found that complement was destroyed when heated above 55 Celsius & this is the basis of the complement-fixation test for antibodies. In 1901 he founded a Pasteur Institute in Brussels. In 1906 he discovered the bacterium, Bordetella pertussis, which causes whooping cough. He won the 1919 Nobel prize for medicine.
