Acorns borne sessile, pro-duced in great numbers; nut oblong to subglobose, i/o long,light brown often striate, hoary pubescent at the apex; cupsaucer-shaped enclosing the nut only at the base or for aboutone-half its length. North Carolina to Florida and west to Texas. It occursprincipally on sandy uplands, mostly near the coast. In Texasit extends to the valley of the Brazos. The wood is hard, close grained, strong.
