Rising by successive stepshe became Assistant Foreman ofEngine Company No. 23 in 1894 andlater Foreman. On the reorganiza-tion of the department under thepresent charter in 1900 he becameCaptain, and in 1908 was made Battalion Chief. From August 1,1912, to June 1, 1914, he served as acting Second Assistant Chief ofthe De])artment. Chief Layden is married and the father of a sonand daughter. He belongs to the Native Sons of the Golden Westand the Knights of
