A funeral takes place as a cardboard coffin carried by friends and relatives, is carried into the Capilla Central, located in the middle of Necropolis de Colon or El Cementerio de Cristobal Colon (the Cemetery of Christopher Columbus) in the Vedado neighbourhood of Havana in Cuba. Cuban citizens do not have a choice of coffin. The Capilla Central is used for funeral services in the 135-acre Catholic cemetery founded in 1876. The cemetery is full of creamy marble, glittering bronze, polished granite, angels, crosses and rich symbolism by 19th and 20th-century artists. It is one of the most important cemeteries in the world and is held to be the most important in Latin America in historical and architectural terms, second only to La Recoleta in Buenos Aires. second only to La Recoleta in Buenos Aires.
