It was a still, clear night,and the click of the capstans, with the gratingof the chain-cables as they passed throughthe hawse-holes, made a great noise, whichwe feared would serve as a warning to ourenemies. This conjecture proved to be cor-rect, for the Confederates were on the alertin both forts and steamers, and were prepared,as far as circumstances would admit, to meetthe invaders.
