The town has a population of about 20,000and is the chief suburb of Mexico City. There wealthymen from the meircpolis have built magnificent housesand gardens as summer resorts. Not far from Tacubayaand connected with the Cuernavaea division of the Mexi-can Central by a branch line, are the Valdes and SantoDomingo flour mills. Near, the station Olivar are several cotton and papermills. At San Geronimo large quantities of fruit, par-ticularly strawberries, are grown. The town is well sup-plied with water for irrigation. Contreras, a little furtherup the mountain, is said to have the oldest cotton goodsfactory in the Valley of Mexico. Considerable fruit isgrown in the vicinitj/- of that town also. Still further upthe mountain the road enters an excellent timber district,and large quantities of wood and not a little timber maybe seen stored near the railroad tracks at the various sta-tions.
