But all this work, which was done, for the mostpart, with a file, was long and expensive; while the ringsmade in this manner were not round, but tended to assume anoval shape as in Fig. 9, which caused constant leakages andunequal wear in the bushings and cylinders. Furthermore, thismethod was frequently very annoying, because the workmanwho made the rings was obliged to wait for the valve bodiesand piston heads to be finished in order to get the exact diam-eter and width of the grooves.
