African Elephant; Loxodonta africana. An African bull elephant searches for food during the dry season in the Tsavo West National Park, Kenya. Elephants are the largest land mammal with the bulls weighing nearly twice as much as the females. Nocturnal and diurnal, African elephants live in family groups consisting of related females and their calves. The groups are led by an older and wiser female known as the matriarch.
