There is but little in the life of Martin Van Burenof romantic interest. He fought no battles, engagedin no wild adventures. Though liis life was stormy inpolitical and intellectual conflicts, and he gained manysignal victories, liis days passed uneventful in thoseincidents which give zest to biography. His an-cestors, as his name indicates, were of Dutch origin,and were among tiie earliest emigrants from Hollandto the banks of the Hudson.
