This ancient baronialpile consists of a S(piare tower four storeyshigh, with bold projecting battlements surrounding the roof, terminatedby sharj)-j)ointed gables, in which are two recesses of hewn stone sup-posed to have been designed for warders or sentinels. Jlie extraordinarilythick and massive walls, and the style of architecture in several parts,prove that the tower was constructed at a period when strength andsecurity were studied in preference to the graces of ornament and toconvenience.
