African woman holds her antiretroviral medication in her hands, Mozambique. Government-approved treatment for HIV. The tablets are a combination of three drugs: Lamivudine, Zidovudine and Nevirapine. The multiple drugs act on different viral targets to decrease the total burden of HIV, maintain function of the immune system and prevent opportunistic infections that often lead to death. The use of combination drugs is know as highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). The treatment must be taken everyday to be effective, otherwise resistance can develop.
