Laparoscopic appendectomy. Close-up of surgeons preparing to insert a Veress needle to commence a laparoscopic appendectomy. Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique where instruments are inserted into the abdomen through a small incision, in this case through the umbilicus. A Veress needle is used to inflate the peritoneal cavity (a pneumoperitoneum) to aid the surgery. An appendectomy is the surgical removal of the appendix, a small finger-shaped branch of the large intestine. This is usually done when the appendix is inflamed (appendicitis).
