He was a strong Republican throughout life, andat all times manifested much interest in the popular questions of the day. Hevoted for William Henry Harrison, also for his , Benjamin Harrison, and atthe time of casting his fast vote he had sons, grandsons and great-grandsons, fortyin all, who also cast their votes for Gen. Benjamin Harrison. During his earlyresidence in the State, for twenty years he carried the mail summer and winter fromElkhart to his neighbors. He was well known in Elkhart county and enjoyed the. He was a pleasant companion even up to his last days andalthough he passed through many hardships during the pioneer days of this sectionhe never lost his geniality of character, his kindness of heart and his warm sym-pathy with the cause of the oppressed. He died in 1890 at the patriarchal age ofninety years, having for many years been a member of the Mennonite Church. Howas well known for the public spirit he always manifested, and in the home circlehe was kind, considerate and generous, as well as employing these qualities in hisrelations with others. His wife, Sophia, was born in 1806 and died in Elkhartcounty in 1876, she being also a member of the Mennonite Church, and in everysense of the word a helpmate to her husband. S
