Marker on the route of The Zermatt Marathon, one of the worlds most gruelling races. Take another look at the sign. Amusingly it points in one direction whilst the competitors run in the opposite direction. Swiss humour ? The Zermatt Marathon takes place in rugged Alpine terrain. Starting at 1116 metres above sea level, the competitors race up the side of a mountain to the resort of Zermatt, finishing atop the 2585-metre Riffelberg, surrounded by snowy mountain peaks.
