Polarised light micrograph of a cross-section of sweet chestnut, or Spanish chestnut (Castanea sativa). This is a fast growing deciduous tree bearing conspicuous yellow catkins which give rise to spiny edible fruits. The upper half of the image shows springwood in which the cells and vessels are larger with wider lumens. The lower half of the image is autumn wood which consists of a lesser number of smaller cells and vessels. Magnification: x27 at 10cm wide.
