BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — A brick-vaulted corridor in the crypt of the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar serves as an exhibition space for historic photographs documenting the church's evolution since 1732. The underground passage, with its colonial-era architecture, provides an atmospheric setting for displaying the basilica's photographic archives. The brick arches demonstrate the construction techniques used in colonial religious architecture.

Photograph by David Coleman. This vaulted brick corridor in the crypt of the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar dates to the church's original 1732 construction. The underground passage, featuring traditional colonial brick arch construction, has been repurposed as an exhibition space for the church's historical photographic collection. The architectural elements of the crypt corridor demonstrate the building techniques employed by the Jesuit architects Bianchi and Prímoli during the colonial period. This space beneath the main church floor now serves a dual purpose: preserving both the physical architectural heritage of colonial Buenos Aires and documenting the basilica's historical evolution through photographs. The exhibition space represents an innovative use of the historic crypt structure, combining architectural preservation with historical documentation. The brick vaulting and corridor construction exemplify the durability and craftsmanship of colonial religious architecture, while providing an appropriate environment for displaying the church's photographic archives.
