M. Hinkle, together with the Pro-phet and other brethren, Oct. 31, them he passed through all thehardships and mock trials to whichthey were subjected and finally was in-carcerated in Liberty jail. There he re-mained until the spring of 1839, whenhe .together with his , succeeded in getting away from theguard and escape to Illinois. At Quin-cy, where he remained for a short time,he was ordained to the office of a Sev-enty. Subsequently, he removed to. Ripley county, Indiana, and later estab-lished himself as a tailor in Nauvoo,111., and also assisted in various waysto build up that city. In 1844 he filled amission to North Carolina, and re-turned to Indiana after the Prophetsdeath. In the spring of 1845 he returnedto his home in Nauvoo, where hepassed through all the persecutions andhardships which the Saints had to en-dure in those days. As a captain ofthe Nauvoo Legion, he took an activepart in the defense of Nauvoo, and ren-dered efficient service in the famousbattle fought in September, 1846. Pre-vious to this he had served as an aide-de-camp to General Don Carlos the capitulation of Nauvoo hewent to Winter Quarters, and, later,located temporarily at Kanesville, residing in the latter place hewas elected sheriff of Pottawattamiecounty.
