Several of these mats are in my col-lection, and very curious examples of nativeart they are. One of these has cost the weaver an infin-ity of trouble. It is nearly five feet wideand three in depth. The warp has beendyed black, while the weft is white; and theeffect of the weft passing in reverse linesacross the warp is very good. Every otherline of weft is decorated with the cylindri-cal tassels each of which is nine inches inlength, and is divided into four parts by theremoval of the epidermis. These tasselsbegin at the fourth line of warp, and areregularly continued to the lower edge,whence they hang so as to form a account of their number, they would. (1.) WOMEN MAKING MATS.
