Michener, Jr., enlisted in April, 1917, in Bat-tery A, 128th Field Artillery, 35th Division, U. S. A. He receivedhis training at Camp Doniphan, Fort Sill, Okla. Corporal Michener spent one year overseas; was in the Bat-tle of Argonne Forest. He was sent over with signal detail threemonths in advance of his battery. After finishing courses in twoartillery schools in France, he was sent to First Army Head-quarters as private secretary to Major Meyer, of the GeneralStaff. Previous to this, while leading a party of men to establishwires from the front lines to headquarters, he was gassed. In January, 1919, he was operated upon for appendicitis, sospent three months in hospitals. In May, 1919, at Fort Riley,he received his discharge. 195
