Just what is an Overhead Ferry? (That's what it's called anyway). It's a platform with a basic area of 4 x metres attached to two tightly-spanned steel ropes, which travels from one bank of the River Wupper to the other a few metres high above the water. It is constructed in a rather similar manner to a hand car, and the ferry staff – with the help of passengers - drive it from one side to the other. The trip only lasts a few minutes and, although it might wobble a little, there is no risk of falling overboard because of the high guard rail. The ferry is officially tested for safety by the German authorities every year. The 60 metre ride offers visitors a fantastic view along the river from a position impossible for anyone on foot. In addition travellers on the ferry have a wonderful view of the Müngsten Viaduct. Engineers and fans of overhead travel will tell you on the Internet that an Overhead Ferry hangs from a steel construction. The Overhead Ferry in the Müngsten Viaduct Park, on the other hand, glides above the water on two steel cables. Seen in this light it is technically a cable car, and is subject to the strict regulations laid down by the North Rhine Westphalia cable car law.
