Roman shoe, 19th-century artwork. This shoe was found at Southfleet, Kent, UK, by the local rector Peter Rashleigh. This shoe is one of two pairs Rashleigh found in a sarcophagus in what he considered to be a Roman burial ground. The shoes were made of fine purple leather, with a hexagonal design worked with gold. Later scholarship identified the shoes as for a high-ranking adult woman, probably dating from 3rd-century Roman Britain. This and other items from this site are now held at the British Museum. This artwork illustrated a letter from Rashleigh, published in Volume 14 (1803) of 'Archaeologia', the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
