Melrose Abbey, Scottish Borders, Scotland
Founded in 12th Century by Cistercian order of monks drawn by the historic associations with St Aidan and St Cuthbert at the monastery of Old Melrose a little to the east of Melrose. This was fouinded by St Aidan shortly before 650 bringing monks from the Columbian Monastery on Iona and was destroyed by the Scots. The original abbey church at Melrose was largely destroyed by an English army in 1385. The building which replaced it is largely what we see today.
