Commissions had previously been issued toofficers for recruiting Company B, which was immediately organized, with Wil-liam Tripp, captain; T. Elwood Clarke, first lieutenant; the latter subsequentlybuilt Fort Hutchinson at the James River crossing, which became an importantelement in the defense of Yankton.
