Europe Greece Cyclades Santorini Ancient Thera The Ancient Thera, which was only urban center of the island of Santorini from the ninth century BC to the spread of Christianity, it spread over a flat area of limestone and was naturally fortified by the falling slopes overlooking the sea, what made it the ideal place to observe the surrounding area and check the southeastern Aegean. The ruins that have been preserved until today date from the Hellenistic period and are sufficient to show what was the center of the ancient city, one of the few to have come down to us in good condition. More inside, visitors can admire the ancient theater, built on a lower level than the road during the Ptolemaic period and modified under the dominion of the Romans. Behind the public buildings there are many private homes of different sizes, depending on economic conditions of the owners. Although they come down to us only the foundations of houses, you can still see the guidelines of the rooms, gardens and water tanks. The sanctuary of Apollo Carneo is located in the south-east of the city and was the place where he kept his Carnea, the most important festival of Thera, also celebrated after the seventh century BC precisely in honor of Apollo; survive today only ruins of the temple, the square of Gymnopaediae and a large water tank. The sanctuary of Apollo Pito was built instead in the southern part of the city and its ruins arose then an early Christian basilica. Further on we find the chapel of the gods of Egypt, carved in the rock and a cave dedicated to Hermes and Heracles. Before leaving Thera can also visit the school and the military housing, dating from the time of Ptolemy.
