REMOVING FRONT TUBE SHEETS BY PAUL The removal of a damaged or badly worn front tube sheetfrom a locomotive boiler is, with the best known methods, along and tedious operation. The method here described is onethat has proved to be more satisfactory than some the writer hasseen used, and is the practice at the Norfolk & Western shopsat Portsmouth, Ohio. A piece about 4 or 5 in. long is cut out of one side of thesmoke box stiffening ring. This piece is taken out on the hori-zontal center line of the smoke box and extends an equal dis-tance above and below the line. A piece of the same length isthen cut out to one-half the depth of the smoke box division. Method of Cutting Rings to Remove a Front Tube SIneet ring, on both sides of the smoke box and on the same horizontalcenter line as before. After all the rivets and braces have beenremoved from the tube sheet, it is pulled over to a horizontalposition and removed from the front end through these has been found that after the new sheet is put in place it isnot necessary to set a piece in the division ring, as it is not ma-terially weakened. A piece is fitted and riveted in the stiffen-ing ring, holes being provided for holding the front in time required to do this work under ordinary conditions isfrom 12 to IS hours.
