Moai monolithic statues Easter Island 1869

From an original Illustrated London News engraving published 1869. This is the original image as published. A version cleaned to remove the bleed thru text can be purchased by searching for KT7P08. Believed for many years to be just heads recent excavations have shown that they are actually whole body statues that were buried up to their shoulders on the slope of a volcano. In fact the lower bodies have been shown to be covered in tattoos. The crater is named in this illustration as Otuiti crater, but I think that may be a Victorian error. More likely is they are in the Rano Raraku quarry.
