Uterine septum, image 1 of 4. This endoscope view inside the uterus shows that the organ has been divided in two by an internal wall or septum (white, vertical). This disorder arises when the reproductive organs develop abnormally in the embryo. Once diagnosed, the septum is often removed surgically from women of child-breaing age to prevent miscarriage. The horizontal wire is part of a surgical instrument used to cut away the septum. To see a sequence showing the removal of this septum, see images M850/675-678.
