St Georges Hall, Saló de Sant Jordi, Palau de la Generalitat, Barcelona

Saló de Sant Jordi is structured in three naves separated by large pillars and topped by a dome, visible from Plaça de Sant Jaume. It was designed by Pere Blai as a new chapel to replace the older Gothic one. The walls and ceilings are covered by large paintings with historical themes, dating from the first third of the 20th century. The Palau de la Generalitat is the seat of the Government of Catalonia and the Presidency of the Generalitat. The oldest part of the building dates from 1403 and is one of the few medieval buildings in Europe that is still used as the seat of the original institution that built it. After the 1936-39 Civil War Franco abolished the institutions of the Generalitat and it became disused but when democracy was restored again after the 1977 General Election, the Palau became once again the seat of the Generalitat.
