Kennedy Atlf Utirs. 19 18-1919 THE spirit of 1919, as one will notice by observing her athletic career, hasbeen both loyal to the old traditional contests of the school, and also brim-ming over with patriotic sacrifice. When in the spring of 1917 war wasdeclared, athletics were at once dropped and affairs were placed upon a militarybasis. That spring we had no varsity teams. Many of our athletes enlisted imme-diately and carrying Andovers fighting spirit with them have fallen on the field,gallantly battling for those principles which the old hill had taught them. Fromthe spring of 1917 until the fortunate November 11, 1918, athletics have been asecondary matter with us, and it has been through the self-sacrifice of the fellowsalone that we have had any teams whatever. Way back in the fall of 1915 it was with sad hearts that we watched CaptainGleasons team wade its way through the season, each game adding more our crippled team was defeated by Exeter, 37 to 7, a defeat hard for us toswallow.
