Editorial use only Food additive testing. Volunteers in a study of the toxicity of food preservatives at the US Bureau of Chemistry, the predecessor of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). During these tests the volunteers would eat increasing doses of common food additives and the impact on their health would be recorded. The study began in 1902, with Borax being the first additive tested, and ran until 1907. The volunteers became known as 'The Poison Squad'.
