The Queen's University of Belfast. The iconic Lanyon Building at Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland, featuring the bust of US Senator George Mitchell, Chancellor of the University, from 1999 to 2009. The magnificent main building was designed in 1849 by Sir Charles Lanyon. He was also responsible for designing other Belfast landmarks such as Belfast Castle, Crumlin Road Gaol and the Customs House. The University was founded by Royal Charter in 1845 by Queen Victoria as part of The Queen's University in Ireland and was designed to be a non-denominational alternative to Trinity College Dublin which was controlled by the Anglican Church. The University was originally made up of three Queen's Colleges - in Cork, Galway and Belfast., each of which is now a separate, independent university.
