Fund Raising Table Cloth, Robin Hood’s Bay Museum, North Yorkshire, England, UK, featuring the signature of J Arthur Rank of the Rank Organisation

A table cloth from 1936 which was used as a fund-raising device for the Methodist Church. Numerous persons, both local and otherwise, would pay to sign the cloth. The signatures – over 1000 in this instance were then embroidered over by volunteers. A signature in on corner of the cloth attributes the work to be of one Rachel Scales. It raised £210, 7 shillings and 6 pence. One signature is that of J Arthur Rank: he was in the region filming “Turn of the Tide” in 1935. Another famous signature is that of Stanley Baldwin - British Prime Minister form 1935 – 1937, having previously served as such from 1923 -1924, and 1924 – 1929. The signature to the left of J Arthur's is believed to be of Nell (Nellie) Rank, his wife.
