As we drew nearer, helped Inez from the saddle, when in perfectecstacy she rushed to her mothers arms. Words can-not express the joy manifested on this happy screams were painful to hear. The mothercould scarcely believe what she saw; and after everyembrace and gush of tears, she withdrew her arms togaze on the face of her child. I have witnessed manyscenes on the stage, of the meeting of friends after along separation, and have read highly-wrought narra-tives of similar interviews, but none of them approached. N TO SANTA CRUZ. 403 in pathos the spontaneous burst of feeling exhibitedby the mother and daughter on this occasion. Thanksto the Almighty rose above all other sounds, whilethey remained clasped in each others arms, for thedeliverance from captivity, and the restoration of thebeloved daughter to her home and friends. Althougha joyful scene, it was a painfully affecting one to thespectators, not one of whom, could restrain his several minutes of silence, the fond parent em-braced me, and the other gentlemen of the party, insuccession, as we were pointed out by her daughter;a ceremony which was followed by her uncle, and theothers, who had by this time joined us.
