Wood Avens seeds. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Wood avens (Geum sp.) is an adaptable, short-lived, weedy perennial that can be found in any kind of shaded habitat. Flower head form a spherical brown to dark brown bur about 2 cm in diameter; the seed in the bur has a sharply hooked tip. Seeds cling to, and are efficiently distributed by, mammal fur, bird feathers, and clothing of humans. Magnification: x265 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
