Monument to Napoleon I (1769-1825), Emperor of the French, in Ajaccio (Corse-du-Sud), France

The commemorative monument of Napoleon I known as Le Casone or even monument of the place of Austerlitz, is a monument devoted to Napoleon I in his city of birth, Ajaccio, in Corse-du-Sud, in France. Located on the west side of Place d'Austerlitz (formerly Place du Casone), this monument is made up of a full-length statue of Napoleon I. The latter is in military uniform (“little corporal”) as he was dressed at the Battle of Austerlitz. The statue is at the top of a granite step pyramid that can be climbed by a staircase flanked by two eagles. The dates "1769" and "1821" correspond to the date of birth and death of the Emperor. The statue, cast by Antoine Durenne, is a copy of that of Charles Emile Seurre located in the main courtyard of the Hotel des Invalides in Paris. Napoleon's cave is next door. According to legend, Napoleon often took refuge there during his childhood. The result of a public subscription initiated in 1935, the monument was inaugurated in 1938. It was the architect Roger Séassal, also author of the monument to the dead of Rauba-Capeu in Nice, who was in charge of the study of the project.
