What may be designated as the Albe-marle-Pamlico section of North Carolinaembraces ten counties bordering on thetwo sounds, namely : Currituck, Cam-den, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Chowan,Washington, Beaufort, Tyrrell, Hydeand Dare. These ten counties have anaggregate area of about 7000 squaremiles, of which about 2500 square milesis water, which in this part of the countryis well nigh as productive and profitableas the land. The entire population ofthese counties is about 90,000, chieflyscattered, as the ten chief towns numberonly about 12,000 in their aggregatepopulation. Considering the chief characteristicsof these counties and taking them asthey are traversed in going southward,we first enter Currituck county, whichforms the northeastern corner of NorthCarolina. Currituck sound, which slicesa long narrow strip of sand from 633. ALBEMARLE AND PAMLICO. 635 the coast, is the favorite shooting groundof many wealthy Northern sportsmen,who control the privileges of large areasof land and water. Snowden, on theNorfolk & Southern railroad, is thestation from which the most frequentedshooting grounds are reached. Butapart from this attractive feature ofCurrituck county, its most importantcharacteristic is the trucking industry,which will steadily spread southwardfrom Norfolk along the lines of rail andwater communication. The soil is aclay loam, which is better suited tocorn, rice and truck than to cotton,although some cotton is raised here. Camden county, lying next to Curri-tuck, is a long narrow strip of country,running from the Dismal Swamp, on theVirginia line, down to Albemarle Pasquotank and North rivers lie oneither side of the lower portion of thecounty, making a peninsular of it. Theupper portion of the county is chieflysemi-swamp land with a great amountof short-leaf pine,
