Cheeky lunch. Scotland, UK: THESE IMAGES, captured this week, show a red squirrel leaping into the new year, ready for 2023. One image shows a squirrel enthusiastically leaping into the air, desperately trying to gather nuts as quickly as possible. Squirrels are rarely seen in the winter as they are only active for a few hours. They can sleep for 18 to 20 hours a day. The red squirrel can grow up to nine inches long, with the addition of an eight inch tail, and weigh around 340 grams. These images were captured by photographer Deborah McPhail (51) in Kirkcudbright, Scotland using a Canon EOS R5 camera. ?This photo was taken from a photography hide,? said Deborah. ?A few hazelnuts were placed on an elevated platform and I had to wait many hours for the squirrel to come and investigate and enable me to capture the exact moment it jumped onto the platform to feed. ?I?ve always enjoyed watching animals but have only taken to photographing them in this way over the last year. ?I love the unpredictability and get a real buzz when I manage to get the shot I am looking for. ?It was great to be so close and undetectable to the squirrel.
