I also told him, in my letter, that to fall backfrom the position gained would result in a great loss of pres-tige. That portion of the main road extending from my head-quarters, situated under the crest of the hill some 150 yardsbehind the firing-line, to those occupied by General Shafter,some five miles in the rear, was one of the worst pieces ofhighway it has ever been my lot to encounter.
