Flags of other types are notalways heeded as they should be. In thisnew type of flag, when properly placed,there has been no instance in which it hasbeen disregarded. As shown in the accom-panying illustration it consists of a simplyconstructed and light derailing frog whichis adapted to be placed securely in positionon the rail, and attached to which is alight rod projecting at a rising angletowards the center of the track, and towhich is attached a metal disk of con-. \IR(11\I.\ i;AIII;.i\ii i;iiK ANDDERAil, siderable size painted blue, and readilyseen at a considerable distance. It isgenerally placed at a distance of aboutforty feet from the car it is intended toprotect, so that even a rapidly moving caror engine would he stopped on the tiesbefore reaching the car protected. In the case of the derailing deviceand flag described and illustrated, the de-railing appliance, consisting of a movablemetal piece, is so shaped that when placedover the rail, it will lift and guide thewheel flange over the rail to the outsideof the track. As is well known the blueflag denotes that car inspectors are at workunder or about the train or car and that itcannot be moved or coupled to until theblue signal is removed by the car in-spectors.
