In thefall of 1889, it passed into the hands ofMessrs. Tomlinson & Day, the presentproprietors, and in politics became In-dependent. Mr. J. Tomlinson, Jr., thesenior proprietor and editor, is a Yalegraduate, and a man of large first railroad into Sioux Falls wascompleted August i, 1878, — the Chi-cago and Northwestern. In 1879 and1880 the Dakota Southern and SouthernMinnesota lines were built into SiouxFalls; both of them were soon after ab- 352 THE DAKOTA Episcopal Cathedral — Astor Memorial. sorbed by the Chicago, Mihvaukee, andSt. Paul system. The next road to reachthe city was the Buriington, in 1886, fol-lowed by the Illinois Central in 1887,and the St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Mani-toba in 1888. The Burlington andIllinois Central companies have botherected magnificent stone passenger andfreight depots, and the other roads arecontemplating similar enterprises. On August 9th, 1871, Dr. Josiah had recorded the original town-site plat, called J. L. Phillips SiouxFalls. It consisted of nine blocks, themain business street (now, as then), be-ing named Phillips Avenue. Subsequentadditions to the village and city are to mention, the present citylimits covering about twenty-six squaremiles. The village of Sioux Falls wasincorporated in January, 1877, with apopulation of six hundred, and the cityin 1883, with four thousand.
