Jerichow, Germany. August 02. 1997. Jerichow Monastery, 1148 - 1220. Crypt. Pillar from Magdeburg Cathedral. Pillar, east. Marble. In 950, Otto I ordered that marble, granite and porphyry columns from Ravenna be brought to Magdeburg for the Ottonian cathedral (a sign of the legitimate continuation of the Roman Empire) in 1207 the Ottonian cathedral burned down; part of the Ottonian/Raven columns was reinstalled in the gallery of the high choir. Part of the columns was transferred to the Jerichow Monastery in Magdeburg. From there, one column went to the Premonstratensian Monastery in Leitzkau, the other to the Premonstratensian Monastery in Jerichow as a symbolic sign. More accurate geological studies have shown that the marble of the Jerichow column comes from Middle Egypt; thus this column may already be an ancient Egyptian pillar.
