On , 1767, he married Miss Margaret Mansfield, bywhom he had three sons. At the time of thebattle of Lexington, Arnold was captain of thegovernors guards, nearly all of whom volunteeredto join in the fight at Boston. Soon afterwardhe was sent by Massachusetts to lead an expedi-tion for the capture of Crown Point and Ticon-deroga, and on his way thither met Colonel EthanAllen with a company of soldiers devoted to thesame purpose. OnSeptember nth of the same year Washington dis-patched Colonel Arnold with 1,100 men throughthe wilderness of Maine to assist in capturing Que-bec. After enduring incessant hardships Arnoldand his men arrived opposite Quebec, and on Decem-ber 13th climbed to the Plains of Abraham. OnDecember 31st he was joined by the corps under thecommand of General Montgomery, and a combinedattack was made on the city. The American armywas defeated, Montgomery killed, and Arnolds legseriously fractured. For his gallantry and skillCongress promoted him to the rank of brigadier-general. On October 11, 1776, he fought a navalbattle with a superior force of the British under SirGuy Carleton, during which he ran his own vesselashore, burnt her, and with his other ships and mensafely retreated to Ti
