. Land and peoples of the Kasai; being a narrative of a two years' journey among the cannibals of the equatorial forest and other savage tribes of the south-western Congo . hen wewere desirous of moving on from Lusambo to the countryof the eastern Bushongo, a small Government steamer wasabout to go down the Sankuru to take an official to Gustin kindly gave us permission to travel inthis vessel, thus saving us the extra time which a canoejourney would have entailed. We therefore, after onlya brief stay at the chief town of the Kasai district, con-tinued our journey, glad to move on to a spot more suitablefor our work, but remembering with gratitude the hospi-tality which had been accorded to us by the Commissionerof the District and his subordinates. The Schlagerstrom(the vessel in which we travelled) was in reality nothingbut a launch in which there was only sufficient sleepingaccommodation for the captain and the Government officialwho was going to Luebo. We therefore encamped by theriverside when the vessel was moored for the night, aproceeding to which our weary voyage from Dima toBatempa had well accustomed us. We stopped at a little.
