SALISBURY WATER-COLOUR SKETCH BY ALBERT GOODWIN, 83 Albert Goodwin, admired and cared for amongst his often finelychosen treasures. There were placed in my hands, by a friend ofMr. Albert Goodwins, before they were sent,by Mr. Goodwins generosity, to the Red CrossSale at Christies, half a hundred, I shouldsuppose, of the letters of Ruskin to our artist, who in many particulars has been a painter afterRuskins heart. They are letters of variousperiods, and they end tolerably late. I allowmyself to quote from two of them. The first is an undated letter, written earlyin the acquaintance of Writer and Painter. Itwas penned at Denmark Hill. Ruskin hadevidently been remonstrating as to somethingthat had been done, or left undone ; but youngMr. Goodwin had understood that the remon-strance had been in no way unfriendly. has, however, to reiterate or reinforcehis plea : That you must work for bread is the veryreason for your learning to draw forthwith.
