Blood sampling. Potential blood donor having a drop of blood collected from a pricked finger. The blood is tested for its haemoglobin levels, by dropping it into the blue liquid at right, before a donation is accepted. Haemoglobin is the red-coloured pigment in red blood cells that is involved in oxygen transport. A low concentration of haemoglobin indicates a low red blood cell count (anaemia), meaning that a blood donation could be potentially harmful to the donor. Donated blood is given to patients in transfusions to replace lost blood, for example during surgical procedures or after accidents.
