AFAR REGION, ETHIOPIA: Lava after it has cooled. HAVE YOU ever wondered what it must look like to stare into the depths of hell? Pictures of inside a 150-foot wide continuously active basalt volcano prove that some parts of the planet really do look like hell on Earth. Photographer Karel Tupy (35) visited the world’s oldest continuously active lava lake, Erta Ale in Ethiopia which is one of only six lava lakes in the world.
