Monrovia, Liberia, satellite image. Monrovia, located in the north west of Liberia on its Atlantic coast, is the country's capital and largest city. It was founded in 1822 by the American Colonization Society as a haven for freed slaves from the US and the British West Indies. The city's economy revolves around its harbour (upper centre), which houses several ports and was improved by US forces during World War 2. The Mesurado river (centre right) flows to the harbour. The city has been damaged in recent years by two civil wars (1989-1996, 1997-2003). Taken by the Ikonos satellite on 28 November 2000.
