Swiss Cottage - Cottage Orness built in 1816 and designed by John Nash, Near Cahir, County Tipperary, Ireland
Swiss Cottage, beside the River Suir near Cahir in County Tipperary, is a sublime example of cottage orneé style designed by the Regency architect John Nash, for Richard Butler, 10th Baron Cahir. Completed around 1810, it's a magnificent example of an ornamental cottage in which its asymmetrical design was deliberately flawed and distorted to appear unsophisticated. A place mainly to entertain guests, hand painted murals and the most expensive wallpaper in the world at the time, made by Dufour in Paris, were used to complete the fantasy. A few years later it was abandoned, but rescued in the 1980s during a restoration project funded by the American philanthropist and author Sally Aall, overseen by a partnership of the Irish Georgian Society, the Port Royal Foundation and Sybil Connolly. The cottage is now in the care of the OPW.
