A widow asks Arthur, with Gareth at his side, to return the field taken from her husband, who is now dead.

King Arthur is the legendary British ruler of the late 5th and early 6th centuries. In this image, King Arthur of Britain is pictured on his throne. At his side is Lord Gareth (the youngest son of Arthur's half-sister Morgause). who had recently come to the court. A widow comes in and cries out that King Uther, Arthur's father, had taken her field in a promise to give her and her husband gold, which he never did, and now her husband is dead. Arthur asks, which she would rather have, the field or the gold. The widow answers the field, as her husband loved it. Arthur then gives her the field and three times the gold his father Uther had promised. Gareth, seeing this, believes Arthur is a just king. There are many versions to Arthurian legend. The illustration dates to 1916.
